Interview with Scott Stearns (May 2015)

Hey Mr. Wizard, how are you doing?

Hello I am doing good.

Let’s start right away. How did you begin being keen on rock music? What was your first album purchased?

My first heavy rock album was Billy Idol’s self-titled record. I started out listening to New Wave and Punk in the 1980’s and then got into heavy metal.

You’re also known as an artist in certain circles – for making exhibitions, galleries, and stuff. Did everything begin with drawing on a sheet of paper in the 8th grade?

I started very early since around kindergarten drawing monsters, robots and aliens. I was also very into Godzilla and old monster movies in grade school. Then in middle school I was very into Dungeons and Dragons and Monster, Eerie, Epic and Heavy Metal magazines,  and artwork from H.R. Giger, Frank Frazetta, and Boris Vallejo.

Let’s dig a bit into your hardcore projects. There was a group Die-Hard that turned into Integrity. How long have you been playing together, and do you keep in touch with these guys now?

Die- Hard was me on guitar, Aaron Melnick on bass, Dwid and then Stork on vokills and Chubby Fresh on drums. We went on a small tour with Outface, Derek Green from Sepultura’s  old Cleveland punk rock band. Then we recorded the album Looking Out For Number One.  We were only were together for a year or two. I keep in touch with Aaron and recently hung out with Chubby Fresh at a Slayer concert.

There was an awesome group Madman Mundt, and you recorded 2 albums of the coolest crossover with it. Dont you want to revive the legend?

Madman Mundt was a lot of fun and all of those guys were awesome musicians and friends. Mark D. died a couple years ago R.I.P. Me and John and Scott get together every once in a while to jam out some songs.

What do you think – how important is it to have a good punk/hardcore background to play some terrific sludge afterwards?

I started out by listening to the Sex Pistols, FEAR, X, The Dead Boys, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Discharge, Bad Brains, The Flesh Eaters,  G.B.H.  etc.  Then I also try to learn from Black Sabbath, Bolt Thrower and Saint Vitus worship and mix it all together into a mutated rotting pus-swamp.

I’ve recently bumped onto your work on the cover of a 2003 Russian group’s Rogatyiye Trupoyedy album “Devki, Sex I Trupnuy Yad”. I was pleasantly surprised, since I’ve missed this masterpiece then and now looking for the CD. It was more than dozen years ago! Perhaps there wasn’t much commercial on your side then. Who found whom and what impressions do you have from this collaboration?

I think they found my art on the Ballbustermusic website. It was very shortly after I first put my art on the internet in early 2000s and had my own website. Working with a band from Russia was very cool. They were great and paid me by sending me a whole bunch of black market Russian heavy metal cd’s. I am always happy when I can work with people on the other side of the planet in different countries and cultures who love heavy music and weird art.

Let’s proceed to the cream of society. Tell a little about your work with Fistula. Do you know why Corey changes band members so often?

I played guitar with Fistula on Burdened By Your Existence, Smoke Acid Shoot Pills, Meth Mouth And The Dead Teeth and some other splits and eps. I have been a fan of Fistula since hearing Hymns Of Slumber. Corey and bahb are two of my favorite vocalists.  Some bands sound like the singer is just trying to sing like a tough guy, but these guys sing from the heart and have a true hate filled sound that can’t be faked. I am happy Corey asks me to record on some stuff and asks me to do different artwork.

Bibilic Blood is a great collaboration and concept, in my opinion. Do you perform together anywhere?

Thank you, no we don’t really play out. We have an attic in the woods that we play and record in a couple miles south of Lake Erie. The woods are where the Mellon Heads are said to live. They are mutated carnivorous children with enlarged heads that escaped from a medical facility that was doing experiments on them. I have never seen one but I hear weird noises sometimes.

Where did you find Suzy with her charming voice?

Me and Suzy used to burn each other cd’s. When she told me she loved Suicidal Tendencies and Slayer I knew we had a great destiny together.

It is such a pity that Morbid Wizard broke up. Guess there had to be one more terrific album, hadn’t it?

Morbid Wizard is not completely broke up we are still working on our next album The Age Of Wizardry. It is just taking a really long time but it will totally be worth it.

Rumors had it that Ultralord resurrected. Are people lying?

I have not heard any rumors.

I think The Disease Concept became a gulp of fresh air on the sludge stage. Bastard vocals and trash reefs are a unique cocktail. I’m sure that having such a robust crew, there are chances to go on tour to the old land. Did you have any offers?

I just did the artwork for Disease Concept,  I am not really in the band. I asked if I could hang out in the studio with them for a while because I wanted to meet Dave and Tommy two of my favorite guitar players. I was a huge fan of Solace for years, and worship The Blood Farmers. Permanent Brain Damage is one of my all-time favorite records.

«Pain Clinic» from the all-star The Disease Concept was announced last year and there seems to be stuff for the 4th album. Where and when can we wait for these surprises

I am not sure but I think it will be soon hopefully.

Among contemporary bands in which you’re involved, can you highlight the principal one, to which you’d like to devote yourself entirely?

Right now I am working on things in phases that slowly alternate over time. Bibilic Blood and then Morbid Wizard and Ancient Sickness.

Tell a bit about the story of Goat Skull Records that seem to be lying entirely on your shoulders. When you launched it, what impacted you? What are the plans for 2015?

Goat Skull Records was something me and Corey always wanted to do to be able to put out our own music and do whatever else we felt like.  We put all the cds out in a dvd case so it gives more room for the artwork and they don’t shatter as easily in the mail. For 2015 we might only release Bibilic Blood’s next cd Maximum Burn.

I try not to miss releases with your covers and buy them on CDs or vinyl. How many other similar fetishists come to you to get your autograph at the full discography?

I am always honored that people like my art. There are so many good artists out there I am always inspired by them.

Have you been thinking of launching your series of comics, where, for example, Fistula’s texts would be played like dialogues?

Yes that would be very cool. I need to do more comic books, but with a good story or lyrics to it.

Perhaps Mr. Wizard has another dozen of little-known projects, about which we should know? For example, Blackwell.  I have absolutely no idea what it is about.

Blackwell was hardcore band that was Me and Corey on guitars, bahb from Fistula on bass, Larry Gargus on vokills and Jeremy on drums. We recorded an album that one song came out on the Will To Fail comp. Some day if I manage to pull my head out of my ass for long enough I will put the cd out on Goat Skull Records. It is very good. Accept Death will also probably record some new songs this year.

Did you have offers as an artist – like to draw a series of porters for a large festival, such as Roadburn or Heavy Days in Doomtown? If not, what would you think about such an idea?

No I never got too much into doing flyers, I just try to stick with cds and album covers and comics.

Thanks for the fruitful conversation, Scott. Hope someday life will bring us together to meet on a gig of one of your projects or in an art gallery, or in a coffee shop.

Take care! And tell a couple of farewell words to the readers of Robust Blog.

Fistula Interview (May 2015)

Hey Corey! How are you doing? Grab your beer and make yourself comfortable

Hello.......

Since the first days of Fistula, you’re the only one who remained “in business”, while many other people also participated. I don’t want to seem rude, but why does Fistula like it so much to devour its participants?

I never had some master plan for what happens. Life is a fucker.

Are you happy with Dan Harrington’s job? It must be very convenient to make your releases on his label? Does he share money from the sales with you?)

Im very happy with Dans role in Fistula. He is my brother as well as my bandmate...and he crushes on the mic...so yeah i am happy..listen to the music...wouldn't you be happy? As far as being convenient to release certain things on Patac....no..we all have soo much going on and we live in different states...its not convenient...so we all work hard to get it done. Of course he shares all the cash...who do you think paid for my Benz parked outside my. Phat cribb yo

Your songs tell about different things. One of the popular topics is that of serial killers and maniacs; do you think one of these persons can get the top place in the list of the most bloody people destroyers?

No...because they are whale shit on the scale when it comes to true evil and death in numbers..just listen to how many people the rolling stones have killed

This year has just begun, and you have already managed to release a new ЕР Ignorant Weapon. It has two your own songs and two covers, one of which is made for GG Allin! Who released it and what’s your GG Allin’s favorite song?)

It is a 2 label release with let the bastards grind & Bad road. My favorite gg song is fuckin the dog or die when you die

Everybody knows that the band takes a lot of time, but every person has a hobby, somebody collects beer caps, or used panties, etc) What're your hobbies? What do you like to do to kill a spare time?

Sharpening pencils

Could Sludge be called an anti-stress cure? And if it's "yes" - why?

You enjoy it..makes you happy right? No stress...

What’s your attitude to religion and will you agree with me that religion is a powerful social weapon?

Religion ...any organized religion...is fucked. Hail the Easter bunny..fuk fuk

I’ve heard rumors that you’re going to visit Russia and give two concerts there. Is that truth?

I fucking hope so..and i hope we play with meth drinker

Simple, but still necessary question. What’re your plans for 2015? Already considered how the band should advance hereafter?

Our plans are to work on new recordings and work Branca back into the band on 2 nd guitar..which had already begun. We have shows lined up in july to test some new songs out...get our cray horses moves down pat son!!

Corey, I know that you’re a very active underground fellow. Can you remember in how many bands you have participated? What’re your favorite ones (except for Fistula, of course)?

I cant remember really but my favorite beside fistula would be accept death with matt and scott.....sloth was fun.....disease concept with jesse..griff.tommy.dave..morbid wizard....rue....sollubi...son of jorel... Blackwell..fuck man..all of them are favorites....

What do you think about women in sludge/doom/stoner? I love brutal female vocals.

Im all for it..

What was the creepiest thing that you’ve ever seen, something that makes your hair turn gray?

Tim conways hairpiece

Aaaand cut! That’s all, thank you very much for this interview!

Thanks for the wonderful moments..i will cherish them always.

Robust Mass. Episode 2: Ethereal Riffian, SYC (31.05.2015)

WEEDEATER @ Robust Gig in Kiev

Robustfellow & Otryv-Pertsa
presents with pleasure:

Gig!

За четыре года с момента выхода предыдущей плиты "Jason... The Dragon"
Hornet, ex-Sourvein), Shep & Owen (ex- Zoroaster, ex-Whores, ex-Artimus Pyledriver) посетит Киев,
является выход свежего опуса с названием "Goliathan"
на культовом французском Season of Mist, так что всем год лак и гуд спид!

ETHEREAL RIFFIAN - Aeonian (Another Robust Review)

Reaching a Different Kind of Nirvana: Ethereal Riffian’s Aeonian
Oneness. Sensation. Awareness. Not necessarily in that order – these are a few of the track listings you’ll hear when cracking open a portal into Ethereal Riffian’s mesmerizing Aeonian. And like the definition of the title itself, the effect is everlasting – if you’re up for a sonic hangover and a complete submission into enlightenment in the way that only music can achieve.

Edge of Enlightenment
Brooding from the overtones of late 60’s psychedelic meshed with grunge, the band’s second album ascends to an acme of multi-sensual revelations through the ritualistic poundings of heavy metal and otherworldly chant. It’s as if the Gods of Valhalla have become oversaturated with carousing and entered a temple of Tibetan monks, consequently resulting in a beautiful explosion of the universe. If order comes out of chaos, then Ethereal Riffian delivers it aplenty in the hammering dissonance of its grinding chords juxtaposed against the twilight of soft, cosmic sounds. Literary parallel: in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, William Blake reveals “The path of excess leads to the palace of wisdom” and there is a dark/light resonance of that mantra in this work.

The listener is plunged into an excess of thick sound and delirious vocals in “Thugdam” (Sensation) which transforms into a pulsing, chanting interlude to the next track. After the numbing repetition of the first few minutes, new melodic sequences, a change of dynamics, and the colorful harmonics of acoustic instruments begin to depict a new sequence, fading away into oblivion before the “March of Spiritu” (Rise of Sheol). Ghoulish sounds rise from the ashes of the first track’s inferno, before transforming into a seductive, lyrical guitar heralded by pounding bass and snare – an intoxicating, poisonous line which is then crushed by riotous noise once again. A return to the chanting motif, heavy crashing and whirling in and out of light, fleeting guitar rifts in the upper register make the juxtaposition truly magnificent, almost as if sucking the listener in and out of different dream states. Whatever the incantation, there is a sense of an entire world being discovered, every change sweeping with every key progression and build-up of rhythm and dynamics.

Ethereal Noise
At no time is the album afraid to plunge into head-on fury or celebration. This is not meditation for the meek, and something reminiscent about Dante’s hell lingers here. But this is purgatory, friends, and the heavy-chorded heavens are not far behind.

“Wakan Tanka” (Awareness) weaves a mysterious tapestry of sultry drum beats, mellow, brooding guitar, and a drone-like yet snaky sound that simulates something in between Tibetan chant and a didgeridoo. The first few minutes play around with a few musical ideas, slowly developing the motif and enabling the listener to reach a more meditative state. The drone-like chant is truly haunting, and the power which follows is a sublime climax. Truly celebrating the marriage between the celestial and the human, this is the track that unleashes both fear and beauty, pushing through its cathartic-like growls, moans, and cries before reaching enlightenment itself; the listener has reached their zenith. “Anatman” (Oneness) is a therapeutic come down, healing, fluid yet exuding a strong sense of stillness. It is the meditative state at its most powerful, floating in cosmic ecstasy one moment with the musical silhouette of distant flutes then plunging into power chords and menacing whispers once again. At intervals it ideas seem to reflect a strong Pink Floydian flavor reminiscent of the DarkSide of the Moon era and all its metaphysical, music glory before dissipating into a disjointed, sweaty silence. It truly is an experience to undertake, one which is violent yet tender, wrapped in the lust of excess one moment then divining under purity the next.

After thoughts
It’s difficult to undertake a journey like this and not be reeling afterwards. While each track is substantial in its own merit, it is the album in its entirety which lends to the ultimate sonic aesthetic and spiritual pilgrimage. Ethereal Riffian is clearly going for an experience which transcends the norm and gives listeners something to clamp their teeth on. It’s the kind of album which is more than just about expelling angst, but even discovering components of the self by healing through its many ups and downs that mirror human nature while striving for something higher. There is a definitely therapeutic element of it like Ethereal Riffian’s other works, and like much of related metal/stoner music the potential to carry a universal yet intimate spiritual resonance at liveperformances is great. As a second album, Aeonian encompasses an already developed, mature understand of sound dynamic and concept, yet remains refreshing in its scope.

So shut off the lights, lay back on the floor, and let the encroaching darkness of the room envelope you as you let Aeonian fill your vessel and take over.
